Naia Peery, a student at Lehman Alternative Community School, and her teacher, Alexandra Hartley, are charged with researching and discovering the untold story of Second Lieutenant Kathryn Lucille McCarthy, an American service member memorialized at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. Their research is part of Sacrifice for Freedom®: World War II in the Pacific Student & Teacher Institute, a cooperative learning program coordinated through National History Day®, and sponsored by Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum, the USS Missouri Memorial Association, and Pacific Historic Parks. To complete her research, Peery is asking anyone who knew Second Lieutenant McCarthy or her siblings, her friend Second Lieutenant Rita Erard, or other members of the Medical Air Evacuation Services to please get in touch with Ms. Hartley at alexandra.hartley@icsd.k12.ny.us.
