Finding Primary Sources Online

This workshop is designed to support students who are working on History Day projects, but all students, teachers, and parents are welcome to attend. We’ll review some important tips and tricks for finding primary sources online: where should we look, and what search strategies work best?

Creating an Annotated Bibliography

This workshop is designed to support students who are working on History Day projects, but all students, teachers, and parents are welcome to attend. We’ll talk about how to cite primary and secondary sources, and then how to assemble those in a bibliography and write annotations for each source.

Long Island History Day Teacher Workshop

Learn from the local experts about NHD 2021. Featuring special guests Laura Cinturati from Sagamore Hill 
National Historic Site, National Park Service, Huntington High School teacher Lauren Desiderio, Long Island History Day coordinator Denise Deputy, and more! The workshop will review the New Rules and New Rubric Evaluations, as well as information about the 2021 theme, "Communication in History: The Key to Understanding." CTLE credit and co-sponsorship provided by the Niagara Frontier Council for the Social Studies. National History Day Teacher Workshops 
FREE, Open to all New York teachers
October 8, October 22, November 12, 2020
4:00-6:00 p.m. Eastern
These late afternoon online workshops introduce teachers to the National History Day program, a project-based program for students in grades 6-12. Each workshop features an introduction to the History Day program, a session by a teacher who currently uses History Day in the classroom, and an introduction to regional, state-wide, and national resources. These workshops are made possible by a grant from the Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership. For more information, email Rich Strum, Fort Ticonderoga Director of Academic Programs, visit the workshop website, or view the workshop flyer.

  • VHD Documentary Workshop - Thursday, December 3rd from 4:00-5:00 PM - Join VHD and documentary makers Hannah Ayers and Lance Warren from Field Studio to discuss tips and tricks related to documentary making. Virginia based Field Studio is the Emmy winning team behind VPM's The Future of America's Past and many other projects focused on the intersection of history and social justice. 
  • VHD Paper Writing Workshop - Tuesday, December 8th from 4:00-5:00 PM - Join VHD and Mac Marquis from the College of William & Mary's History Writing and Resource Center to discuss tips and tricks related to writing a historical paper. 
  • VHD Performance/Acting Workshop - Thursday, December 10th from 4:00-5:00 PM - Join VHD and acting professionals Dean Knight and Austin Lewis to discuss tips and tricks related to producing and acting in a performance.
  • VHD Exhibit and Website Workshop - Thursday, December 17th from 4:00-5:00 PM - Join VHD, the VMHC's Sr. Director of Curatorial Affairs Andy Talkov, and the Valentine's Elise H. Wright Curator of General Collections (and former VHD Coordinator!) Christina Vida to discuss tips and tricks related to designing a historical exhibit and website.

Students Teaching Teachers Forum
October 27, 2020, 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. ET
Special Introduction by Ken Burns
The first event, the "Students Teaching Teachers" forum, will feature a discussion moderated by NHD Director of Programs Lynne O'Hara, and is an opportunity for teachers in your programs to hear from and ask questions of the student winners about their research processes. Representatives from the Library of Congress will be participating as well, and will present the students with copyright certificates for their documentaries.

Second Annual Student History Documentary Film Festival
October 28, 2020, 12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. ET
Special Introduction by Ken Burns  
The second event takes place the following day and is a virtual film festival. The winning documentaries will be screened live, followed by a moderated Q&A during which the winners will discuss their projects and will answer questions from students across the country.
